* Marietta was the first settlement in the Northwest Territory, founded by the Ohio Company of Associates in 1788, and named after the French Queen Marie-Antoinette.

* The Muskingum River was crucial in the 1800s for travelers on the Underground Railroad and tours are offered at some sites.

* From spring through the beautiful autumn season, The Valley Gem Sternwheeler offers river cruises to visitors. The W.P. Snyder Jr., the only steam-powered sternwheel towboat still afloat in the United States, is moored behind The Ohio River Museum.

Big Muskie Bucket

Come see one of the largest pieces of mining equipment in the world. During its heyday it could move millions of tons of earth each day! You can stand inside the original drag line excavation bucket, which is the equivalent size of a 12-car garage! You won't want to miss this important piece of history.

Campus Martius Museum

The museum is housed in a historic building once part of the original stockade built to protect settlers during the Ohio Indian Wars or 1790 -94. Pieces of the stockade have been spread throughout town and were used in the building of several additional houses. There a lot to explore in this interesting building!

Peoples Bank Theatre

The historic Peoples Bank Theatre has been making memories in Marietta, Ohio, for generations. Opened May 9, 1919, as the new Hippodrome Theatre and later renovated and renamed as The Colony Theatre in 1949, Peoples Bank Theatre today hosts the widest variety of live entertainment in the region in a beautifully renovated 940-seat facility, located at Putnam and Third streets in the heart of historic downtown Marietta.
